“Are LED billboards supposed to be bright in order for them to be noticed?” That was one of the many questions people traversing along LED-lit roads ask themselves according to several blog sites and social media posts.







LED billboards are both creative and wonderful sources of information. Moreover, it is undeniably eye-catching.


It was meant to be eye-catching in a sense that it is entertaining, however, that’s not the case for some LED billboards. Several people are already complaining about the glaring light of the LED screens which they describe as ‘blinding’ especially when it’s raining or almost pitch-black. There are also LED screens that use white flashes of light when changing from one ad to another to attract viewers.

According to a book by Karl H.E Kromer entitled, Fitting the Human: Introduction to Ergonomics: Human Factors Engineering, Seventh Edition, the upper limit of human visual tolerance to luminance is about 10,000 cd/m2 (candela square per meter), which is still subject to other factors like a dull or bright environment, viewing distance, weather conditions, etc.


LCD screens may have an average brightness level of 300 cd/m2 or a 55” Industrial grade LCD will be at 500 cd/m2. An indoor LED screen would normally have a brightness of 2,500 cd/m2 whereas a large outdoor LED screen could have a brightness of more or less 8,000-10,000 cd/m2. However, the brightness level of LED displays can’t be adjusted that easily unlike our smart phones and LCD screens.


Some LED billboards are said to be so bright because its luminosity makes up for the quality of the content. To display the content properly some LED screens need to up the brightness level which results in discomfort among passersby and drivers who can’t help but look at the screens.

Although this is not as famous an advertising material as LED billboards are, it has its own advantages. Before you skip to the store to buy one, there are things you should know. One of this is the difference between edge-lit and backlit light boxes.


What’s an Edge-Lit Light Box?


An LED light box use light-emitting diodes instead of fluorescent for illumination. The difference between the two types of light boxes – edge-lit and backlit – can be found in the structure of the light box itself. As its name suggests, an edge-lit light box has light-emitting diodes on the sides of its frame, which shines its light sideways. This indirectly lights the poster on the box.


This has its advantages; for one, since the light bulbs are only located on the sides, it won’t severely affect your monthly electric bill. Despite this, you have to watch out because this type of light box can sometimes lead to a bit of glowing on the sides of the display. One way to avoid this is by using diffusion paper. Although this doesn’t always hide the slight glow, it can reduce it.


You have to mind the size of the edge-lit light box that you will purchase because it will determine the diffusion of light on your poster. Remember that the bulbs in an edge-lit light box are located on the sides of the box only. This means that the larger your light box is, the farther the LED bulbs are from the center of the box. It might lead to poor dissemination of light in the middle part of the light box, making it look dimmer.


What’s a Backlit Light Box?


While an edge-lit light box has LED bulbs situated on the side, a backlit light box has LED bulbs across the box’s whole back panel. In addition, instead of beaming light sideways, the LED on this type of light box faces forward.


In terms of energy consumption, backlit might be more expensive compared to its counterpart. Since it uses several more bulbs compared to edge-lit light boxes, it makes a bigger impact on your electric bill. Despite this, a backlit LED light box is still more energy efficient compared to fluorescent light boxes.


Since a backlit light box has bulbs across its whole panel, it is better when it comes to illuminating posters. Its light distribution is also better which means that you won’t have to worry about dim spots at the center of the light box. Although its design might be bulkier compared to an edge-lit light box, you’ll find that it is easier to change the bulbs of a backlit light box.


In comparison, the edge-lit light boxes in the market normally won’t allow bulb replacements. This means that you’ll have to totally replace the whole light box once the lights are obsolete.

Plenty of devices uses light emitting diode technology to serve their objectives. Among them is LED billboard, commonly used for advertising in the Philippines. Another example of devices that use the LED technology is video walls. In corporate meetings or events, LED video walls can be useful in displaying high-resolution infographics to a wide audience. Its function can be compared to that of a projector.


A projector is a small device that is used to project computer generated images onto a flat surface – like a wall or white board, for instance. Usually, you can find this in universities, professors use them during discussions or lectures. Some of you are probably wondering: if LED video walls and projectors have basically the same function, which is better? Comparing the brightness of LED video walls and projectors can be tricky. This is mostly because their lights are measured differently. The LED light is measured in NIT (measurement of direct light) while a projector’s light is measured in lux (measurement of reflected light).To help you understand, 1 NIT is equal to 3.426 lux. This means that a lot of LUX is needed to achieve the brightness that LED video walls to provide.


In any case, a projector’s brightness fades faster than an LED video wall’s. In a year or so, its brightness would have gone down to 70% of its original illumination. Meanwhile, you can expect that an LED video wall’s brightness will remain in top condition even after a year. This is because LED video walls use only at least 20% to 30% of its brightness capability.


Image Quality


Both video walls and projectors can be used to display images, text, or videos. The question is, between the two, who can provide a better image quality? Almost every display device nowadays is capable of exhibiting high definition content. While this is true for both LED video walls and projectors, the latter is still limited with regards to this aspect.


Once the bulb of your projector starts to become obsolete, the quality of the images it projects starts to deteriorate as well. In comparison, an LED video wall can continually display high-quality images, text, and videos without any worries.




When reviewing the costs of two devices, don’t just rely on the initial cost. If you want to know which product is a much better investment in terms of budget, you have to look ahead and factor in the costs that you might acquire for either of those gadgets in the future. Before anything else though, start with the initial cost. Upfront, an LED video wall will probably cost you more than a projector. This means that at first look, a projector might be the cheaper option between the two.


Now, start factoring in the added expenses, beginning with maintenance. As discussed above, the brightness of a projector starts to wear down around its first year. If you want to get it back to 100%, you’ll have to replace the bulb every year. In addition to that, you’ll probably have to replace the projector’s light engine after year 3; and then again on the sixth year.


On the other hand, you don’t have to replace any bulb or light engine when it comes to LED video walls. Instead, you have to replace its modules. Don’t worry though because this is not bound to happen until maybe year 4. The number of modules that you have to replace will increase by years 7 and 10. Despite this fact, it’s still cheaper to replace modules than bulbs and light engines.


The energy consumption will also fall under additional expenses. Between the two, you’ll probably save more money with video walls, in terms of this aspect. LED video walls only need half of the power that projectors need to be able to function.  Lastly, don’t forget that the average life span of an LED video wall is 12 years. In comparison, a projector’s average life span is around 5 years.


Between projectors and LED video walls, the latter is a better option. LED video walls don’t just provide superior brightness and image quality, it’s also cost efficient. With its many advantageous features such as energy efficiency, long life span, and durability, you’ll surely find LED video walls the superior choice between the two.
