Which is better: LED or LCD Screen Displays?

Monitors, tablets, and televisions all use display technology. This allows us to see images and text when watching TV, playing a game on our tablets, or surfing the internet on our computers. As technology advanced, new screen displays are offered to consumers. In particular, consumers can choose between LCD and LED screens in the Philippines today.


People purchase television sets that use the LCD or LED display technologies. But do they understand the difference between the two? If you are looking to replace your old computer monitor or TV, it would be best to know what and if there is a difference between LCD and LED screen displays.



LCD or liquid crystal diode is a screen display that uses cold cathode technology. Basically, it uses CCFL or cold-cathode fluorescent lamps to light up the screen when viewing images, texts, or videos. Instead of emitting light, LCD technology works to block it. This is one of the most commonly used technology for screen displays today. On the other hand, LED or light-emitting diode screen display does not use the cold cathode technology. Instead of using CCFL, it uses light emitting diodes to illuminate the screen.


They are not really very different from one another. LED screen is like a type of LCD display. LED monitors also use liquid crystal display panels for their screen. The difference lies in the backlight. While LCD monitors use CCFL to provide backlight, LED monitors use LED for backlight.


Advantage of LED Displays

Although both LCD and LED monitors use LCD display, the former’s use of LED for backlighting comes with a few advantages:

  • LED screens consume less energy compared to LCD monitors. Unlike LCD screens, LED monitors do not use mercury, making it more environment-friendly.
  • LED displays offer better color reproduction. It provides vivid colors and richer production of dark colors.
  • Compared to LCDs, LED monitors have a better viewing angle. This means that if you watch from either side of the screen, the image you see is still clear.
  • LED monitors are slightly thinner and lighter, unlike LCD monitors. This is because the fluorescent lights used for LCD’s backlight are heavier and bulkier.
  •  In terms of contrast, LED is better than LCD monitors. As mentioned earlier, LCD monitor’s technology blocks light instead of emitting it. In some cases, light still leaks through. This means that sometimes, black images can’t be viewed as totally black in an LCD monitor. 


In comparison, LED monitors can display black images as totally black.

LED monitors have a longer life span compared to LCD monitors, which only last for about five or six years.


Which is Better?

LED and LCD use the same liquid crystal display. However, instead of using CCFL for its backlight, LED monitors use light emitting diodes. That is supposed to be the only difference between the two. But this single difference in backlighting gave LED monitors a lot of advantage over LCD screen displays.


Although one disadvantage of LED monitor might be its price. LCD displays are less expensive in comparison. But LED’s benefits, like energy-efficiency and longer life span, makes up for its expensive cost. The advantages of using LED gives it an edge against LCDs. In addition, the benefits of owning an LED screen far outweighs its price.
